I think this is the #1 question we get from clients!  It's not easy to come up with great outfits for the whole family.  Here are some great tips to help you get creative. Here is a link to my {What to Wear} pinterest board as well for some inspiration!

1. Coordinating colors, not matching.

Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching. Instead, start with a basic color palette and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme. Shop around to find one patterned piece that you love. It can be a little girls floral dress or a boys plaid shirt, but if you find one central piece, it helps to plan everything around that.

2. Textures and Layers.

Sweater, necklace, headband, scarf, button up shirt, tights, hats, ties. Layers & accessories add dimension, drama, fun, and richness to the overall look.

3. Steer clear of fluorescents.

Fluorescent colors tend to color cast on faces, necks and hair. They’re harsh sometimes. I always recommend versions of primary colors. Yellow (mustard), red (maroon, brick), and blue (navy, royal).

4. Say no to characters.

Yes, your little one may love their Disney character shirts but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be distracting.

5. Think classic.

These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel.

6. Dress head to toe.

Don't forget shoes, socks, nail polish, ect! These areas will be visible in your images.

7. Wear what you feel good in.

If you are not comfortable in what you’ve chosen for pictures, it will show.  If you can’t find a dress you feel good in, but you rock a good pair of jeans, do that!  If you can barely walk in heels, there’s no harm in doing cute and comfy flat boots or pretty sandals. If you really want to wear heals in your images, bring flats to walk from location to location so you don't get sore.
